Sumwonlovesyou....on the mend
The first flagbearer of Dee Tee Stables - Sumwonlovesyou is recovering nicely from a possible career ending injury. Here's is what transpired as told by Steve Byk when he recently visited our filly in Kentucky.
To SWLY partners:
I was able to fit a visit to Sumwonlovesyou in while visiting Kentucky last week, and was anxious to update everyone on what transpired and how she is doing. We have a lot to be thankful for with SWLY, after a nearly disastrous bout with as bad a hoof infection as those involved in its' treatment have ever seen, (including the Rood and Riddle Equine Podiatrist that directed the care).
As you may know, she had just begun training after her knee injury, when Bluegrass Equine Center Farm Manager Bethani White ("paisjpq" at DT) noticed her favoring her left front. Bethani became increasingly concerned when normal treatment seemed to be ineffective. She and Chuck had the Rood & Riddle Podiatrist brought in, and after Dr. Bramlege was consulted, some serious work began to stop and clean out the infection.
Simply put, and has Chuck has explained slightly bit at DT, instead of pushing down and out the bottom of the foot, Sumwon's abcess/infection was traveling up towards her bone structure. Had it reached there, exceedingly costly surgery, or other very tough decisions, would have resulted. In short, the infection was caught in time. The treatment, which included the use of maggots to eat dead tissue in the formerly infected area, has been a total success to date. As the podiatrist finished his work in the last few weeks, the frog and sole at the bottom of Sumwon's hoof just shed itself completely off as fresh, healthy tissue grew in behind the cleansed area.
These portions of her hoof must grow in completely before SWLY can be evaluated by Chuck for a possible resumption of training. Bethani opened the metal plate covering her 'missing' frog and sole for me to witness, and while I haven't gazed upon countless hooves, I've seen my share... I've never seen anything like this, as she had indeed shed the entire bottom portion of her hoof. All areas of the hoof involved in the incident are now back to normal, and she will simply grow a new frog and sole over the next several months.
As Bethani has said on DT, Sumwon looks terrific, has been improving "ridiculously well" and even broke loose the other day and trotted through the beautiful new BEC barn. She will be considered by Chuck for a possible season of racing as a 5 year old once she is ready to resume training. But as Chuck said to me last Friday night, he sees no reason why she can't come back to race in 2009. If there is any further setback, we would instead begin breeding Sumwon.
Given that Sumwon may return to the track after a layoff that started in September 2007, one thing you may now understand from the experience is how a horse can "disappear" for
14-18 months as she has. How many times have you looked at past performances and said, "Where has this horse been?"... Well, now you know what happens when horses are gone for a year and a half...
Our thanks go out to Bethani and Chuck and the Rood & Riddle staff for the tremendous attentiveness and care involved in this ordeal.
More updates, including photos, soon, but until then, know that Sumwonlovesyou has a real shot to come back as a 5 year old and try to get the elusive win photo we all want to see as Dee Tee Stables' original color-bearer.
