Welcome to "Old Friends" at Cabin Creek Farm.....the Bobby Frankel divison

What a better way to spend the eve of the greatest thoroughbred race meet; Saratoga , than with "Old Friends". That's exactly what I did this past Thursday afternoon when I made the trip to Greenfield Center , which is just a few minutes from downtown Saratoga Springs . The destination was the new "Old Friends" thoroughbred retirement farm which had it's grand opening and dedication to the late Bobby Frankel. "Old Friends" is the brainchild of Michael Blowen, who created the original Old Friends thoroughbred retirement farm in Kentucky several years ago. While spending the summer in Saratoga a few year back, he came up with the idea of opening a satellite farm right here in the Saratoga Springs area, after all where would be a better place than where horse racing was king.

This is where Jo-Ann and Mark Pepper stepped in with their farm; Cabin Creek in Greenfield Center and helped Michael Blowen realize his dream for the Spa. It was announced last Fall that this new facility would be up and running just in time for this year's Saratoga meet. With the passing of the Hall of Fame trainer; Bobby Frankel last Fall, Blowen felt it would be appropriate to dedciate the Saratoga version of his "Old Friends" farm to Frankel and have a ceremony on it's official opening day.

A very nice crowd of thoroughbred lovers came this past Thursday afternoon to welcome it's first set of retired thoroughbreds to the farm and it's dedication to Frankel. They came to see former Travers winners; Thunder Rumble and Will's Way, the lovable "loser" Zippy Chippy, the recently retired 13 yr.old - Cool N' Collective, NY breds - Moonshadow Gold, Red Down South & Mr. Cowboy and Bobby Frankel former trainees; New Export and Watchem' Smokey. Plus Karakorum Patriot and Midnight Secret, this group of 11 great old thoroughbreds entertained the crowd at the farm just like they entertained us on track as racehorses.

In the two paddocks at the front of the barn were Watchem' Smokey and Cool N' Collective. These two got a lot of attention when the crowds came into the facility. New Export was confined to his stall, since he likes to bite! Thunder Rumble and Will's Way have their own paddock area to themselves. Moonshadow Gold & Mr.Cowboy was grouped together, as well was both Red Down South & Zippy Chippy. Both Red Down South and Zippy Chippy were extremely playful with each other, with "Red" leading the way. Both Karakorum Patriot and Midnight Secret got a lot of attention in their paddocks located at the top of the hill.

The ceremony of dedication to Bobby Frankel was quite moving with speeches by jockey agent Ron Anderson, Frankel's family members and Hall of Fame jockey; Angel Cordero Jr. A collection of trophies that were given to Old Friends in Bobby's will were on display and there are plenty of more at the Old Friends in Kentucky. Other racing personalities were also in attendance; jockeys, Edgar Prado, Richard Migliore and trainer H. James Bond. A good time was had by all and the crowd in attendance marveled over how grand the Cabin Creek Farm looked in such a short time. For those who missed the festivities on Thursday, there will be another open house on Saturday afternoon (today) from noon until 3pm. Changes for the "bettor" at the upcoming Spa meet

We are less than one week away from the beginning of the Saratoga race meet. There is a lot of new things beginning with the shift from Belmont Park to upstate with most of them will affect the "bettor". The first change came this past Wednesday, when the NYS Racing and Wagering Board gave the ok to NYRA allowing uncoupled racing entries. This means that race entries that do not have "common" ownership but the same trainer can now be two different betting numbers. If the owner places two horses that run in his name only in the same race, they will still be a coupled entry. This change has been long overdue for the betting public and will give the opportunity for better value with these type horses running as two different entries.

It was also announced this past week where NYRA has abandoned the Security Barn that was put in place five years ago when oversight committee recommended this during the state investigation of NYRA operations. This comes as NYRA faces shortfalls and more financial problems on the horizon. The security barn was originally put in place to prevent horses from being tampered with on the day they were going to race. Horses were moved from their own barn to this security barn 6 hours before their respective race. In some instants, the horses got upset because they were taken out of their own element. Even in rare situations the horse would react so bad, it would need to be scratched or would have a poor effort once the race was run. So, it comes to no surprise that many of the horsemen are very happy that the security barn has gone the way of the dinosaur.

With the removal of the security barn, NYRA will step up their testing and drug related issues when it comes to the thoroughbreds that race at all three NYRA tracks. They have expanded and enhance a in-house drug testing program to detect illegal performance-enhancing substances in thoroughbred race horses by utilizing state-of-the-art science, technology and procedural processes. The expanded program includes random out-of-competition testing designed to effectively deter the use of blood doping agents such as Erythropoietin (EPO), bronchial dilators and other emerging threats. Out-of-competition testing will focus primarily on claimed horses and horses shipping in and out of NYRA tracks or running in stakes races. NYRA will also initiate an “in-today” process which will identify all horses in their stalls that are running in a NYRA race within 24 hours. This will afford NYRA the ability to monitor horses the day prior to and in the hours leading up to a race. NYRA will continue testing for illegal levels of total carbon dioxide (TCO2 “milkshaking”) through an “assembly barn” where all horses entering a race will be required to report just prior to moving to the paddock for saddling. Even though one phase of racetrack security has been eliminated, steps have been taken to make sure that ALL horses racing at NYRA are under safe standards protecting the bettor and equine animal.

DEE TEE STABLES .......heating up for the summer!

The summer heat has sure gone up a notch this past week and also has my little racing partnership which after three years continues to grow with addition of several new runners pointed to different spots throughout the country. It's been a year since my last update and since then we've gotten four new horses with two different trainers and our original runner with a foal and another one on the way. Dee Tee Stables continues to move forward and the best is yet to come!

First I'll mention our "original" Dee Tee runner; Sumwonlovesyou who was retired after trying a comeback to races off of lengthy layoff just over a year ago. She was matched with the sire - Purim shortly after her retirement and gave birth to a filly in late April of this spring. About a month or so later, Sumwonlovesyou was bred to the sire- Medalist and will be due next spring with her second foal. She was our first runner and still is referred to as the "Queen" of Dee Tee Stable.

Next comes our "iron runner" of the stable and second member of the group; Kickin N Screamin. Now with 27 career starts for us, she has three victories with eight second place finishes and three spots in the show position. Earning over $50,000 for the stable, she continues at the lower level claiming ladder with most of her races at Philadelphia Park the last six months. She always puts in her best effort and has found a new dimension in her running style being closer to the pace than her earlier in her career from well off the pace. Even though she can be a "handful" at times, KNS always put forth an honest effort.

One of our "local" runners is with trainer Gary Sciacca on the NYRA circuit and his name is Lloydobler. This three year old son of Smarty Jones has knocked heads with such runners as; Rule the Night, I've Gotthefever, Graysonia and Cocalero. Recently, he was gelded and hasn't started in two months. We may point him for a start before Saratoga and hopefully will get at least a race or two sometime during the upcoming Spa meet.

Meanwhile back at Philly Park, two other three year old runners (from the same partnership with Lloydobler) race for trainer Chuck Simon under our stable colors; Lime Green & Slate Blue. The another gelded son of Smarty Jones; Redboard King just broke his maiden last Sunday going five furlongs sprinting on turf. It was only his fourth career start and there are several different options at Philadelphia Park to race in the next few weeks. Also, we have a unraced three year old filly from Northern Afleet named; Missus Mayflower. She's getting very close to her debut soon and she'll start in a easy spot for "team" Simon with Chuck's east coast assistant trainer; Susan.

The most recent runner of our stable is a two year old N.Y. bred filly named; Ausable Chasm. This daughter of sprinter; Hook and Ladder just got her "gate card" and after a few more workouts, may be ready for the races soon. Both, she and Lloydobler will be pointing for races at Saratoga this upcoming meet. Meanwhile, the other three "D.T." runners with Chuck Simon will be racing at Philadelphia Park . Dee Tee Stables has made it to the starting gate with 6 different runners for 54 lifetime starts - 5 wins, 16 second place finishes and 7 show spots with 25 different jockeys at 13 different tracks. What started as a small, just for fun partnership and grown into an experience of a lifetime. The Dee Tee Stable will continue to "heat" up the summer and the months ahead!

Money goes to.......money & we lose out!

Just when you thought we knew the direction that one very famous horse was heading in, less than 24 hours the plans have changed. Just like woman (or in this case, a filly) to change her mind. Well, maybe not her.....just her connections. The local television stations were at the Albany International Airport on Wednesday awaiting the flight that was carrying the reigning "Horse of the Year" Rachel Alexandra who was going in route to her summer destination place Saratoga for possibly one or two starts. The local media was notified on Monday at the annual Saratoga press conference that her connections would have Saratoga race course in their plans for Rachel's next race this summer. But, as this sport has shown to us during the years, things can change in a heartbeat.

The path that Rachel Alexandra has taken this year has been an interesting one to say the least. After winning the Woodward Stakes on Labor Day weekend last summer, her return to the races has been carefully spotted by her owner Jess Jackson and trainer; Steve Asmussen. It seems that the owner has been calling the shots this year where Rachel choses to race. Beaten in her first two starts this year versus suspect competition, she had to produce last time out and she returned to her winning ways at Churchill Downs . Now with three races under her belt, it was thought that since she would be stabled at Saratoga her next start would be here. But no faster then when she settled in her stall on the Oklahoma backstretch, her owner has decided to go for the "big bucks" and ship to the Jersey shore for her next race. Once again, money talks and the New York faithful lose out.

It was announced on Thursday afternoon that Rachel Alexandra would next race at Monmouth Park on July 24th in the ungraded Lady Secret Stakes going the mile and an eighth distance. Originally thought to race at the Spa on August 1st; one week later in the grade I - Ruffian Handicap at the same distance, the connections saw the "pot of gold" at the money Monmouth meet which the purse was raised from $150,000 to $400,000. This purse is 150,000 more than the grade I stake at Saratoga and was increased just for Rachel running in the race. Quite possibly a record purse for an "ungraded" race; not only the purse structure was changed, also the race date and race distance. The original Lady Secret Stakes was scheduled on the Haskell day undercard going a mile & an sixteenth. But, getting the reigning "Horse of the Year" to Monmouth's million dollar meet was the direction the connections wanted to go. Guess it's a case of "money going to money".

The saga of "team" Rachel continues much like a soap opera this season. A very carefully plotted out schedule last year led to history and eventually to "Horse of the Year" honors. This year it seems like the path changes just when it looked like she would face graded stakes competition. The horses that Rachel has faced this year have been anything but top quality runners. Although she did not disgrace herself in her first two starts, she should have beaten those opponents. She finally got her act together in her third start and was thought to step it up at Saratoga in a few weeks. Now, she goes to Monmouth for the money and quite possibly will face mediocre competition again. As we know, the battle lines continue between her fans and Zenyatta's fans. The Rachel fans hold it against Zenyatta because of her races on synthetic surfaces. Now, once again there is ammo for the Zenyatta faithful when it comes what competition Rachel faces and saying it's all about the money. Will it ever end with these two talented horses? Maybe both connections are the real problem, not the horses.
