Aldebutante sidelined

Aldebutante exited Tuesday's workout with an injury to her left front knee that will require surgery to remove a small chip.

From trainer Chuck Simon,

Aldebutante was off Wednesday when walking under tack and after doing some exploratory X-rays we found a small chip in the bottom joint of her left knee. The chip is relatively new and will need to come out via arthroscopic surgery.

The prognosis for return to racing on injuries like this for young horses is usually very favorable. Generally it is 90 to 100 days before returning to training after surgeries like these. We will have Dr. Chris Johnson of the Woodford Vet clinic in Lexington do the surgery and will rehab her at BEC.

Dr. Johnson has done great work for me before and is an excellent surgeon. I am sending him the digital xrays that we took of her today and he will set up a time and date for her surgery. Obviously this is a set back but her age and the size and placement of the chip should keep this a fairly minor surgery and recovery.

This obviously is frustrating given how well Aldebutante worked Tuesday and how much she has grown in the last 2 months, but it's still very early in her career and she should be back in full training around April 1.

Thoroughbred racing at a crossroads

This past year has been very tumultuous both on and off the track. Our nation has faced gasoline prices over $4.00 a gallon this past summer and the banking industry was nearly brought to their knees and needed a bailout from the government. We have seen our nation change in many ways and the future will be very different in the beginning of the New Year with the election of our new president. It’s a very critical time in our lives and the thoroughbred racing industry is not immune to this change.
The thoroughbred industry is also feeling the effects of a “down” economy. An industry that has had hard times for many years with a dwindling fan base and many of the historic breeding farms and racing families leaving the sport because of financial problems. We’ve seen in New York State alone this decade how the political machine can foul things up for a racing organization. There has been no steady working system for the “sport of kings” in this country and this has created too many people not working together for the one common cause; the betterment of thoroughbred racing.
Whether it’s been the problems with NYRA or the Breeders’ Cup; declining attendance at live racing facilities or the thoroughbred animal itself with medication and breakdown issues, the state of thoroughbred racing in 2008 has hit new low on many fronts and it’s time to get things in order.
The Breeders’ Cup has gotten bigger and in this case, bigger is not better. What once was a one day, six race event has expanded to two days and 14 races. The prices at the event have increased to record levels that the common day to day race player can’t afford to go. The financial crunch has impacted the Breeders’ Cup organization and there is a possibly of Breeders’ Cup funded races leading up to the event being cut. The ever changing medication rules and safety issues with the racing surfaces have cause quite an upheaval concerning the sport. Wagering on and off track has been a sticking point with revenues and the introduction of internet wagering has also added another winkle to a very complex problem.
The NTRA has tried it’s best to work out the problems with the sport. But, too many different ideas getting new people interested in the sport haven’t worked out and it becomes a bureaucracy within the organization. There are no uniform medication rules in the country and the power to make what rules there are stick have little teeth in enforcing them. Problems with wagering accounts and takeout throughout the country seem to pop up the beginning of every new racing meet and cause the bettor to be shut out. The competition from other forms of gambling have had a major impact of racing also and the media coverage of our sport on the national scene seems to always take a back seat to other sports even on our biggest event days.
The answer to these problems are not being solved by the actions taken currently from the “powers to be”. Maybe it’s time to listen from the people who made this sport great in the past. These minds have been active in racing most of their lives and have a world of knowledge. We tried to take this sport and mold it into something it’s not for all the wrong reasons. Things worked so well thirty years ago when horse racing was at its peak. It was a much simpler time when attendance on track was high and the big name breeding farms were at their peak. Medication was no factor when a horse ran, because the trainers didn’t use them. It’s time to go back to the drawing board with our sport. The way things are going now holds little future. It would be sad to see thoroughbred racing slowly fade into the sunset and become a thing of the past. We’re going through hard times in our country now and the sport of kings has endured the same thing for quite sometime.

Goodbye my dear Kasi

Our dog and loving family member
KASI
1994 – 2008

She will be missed by all, we love you girl and will never forget you!

It's with much sadness to announce the passing of our dog Kasi early this morning. She had been ill the past few days and in declining health for several weeks. But with the courage that beagles have, she fought until she past away in her sleep. Not once did she whimper or cry, but slowly got tired and peacefully left this world. She joins her sister Jasmine the cat in heaven and once again are reunited for eternity. It's been a rough year for me and my family with the passing of my dad, Karen's mother, aunt and uncle and now this. It will be lonely around the house with Kasi now gone and both kids out on thier own. It's just me and Karen, but the memories of our "pumpkin puss" Kasi "the space dog". Goodbye my friend, we all will missed you & love you always.

Sumwonlovesyou....on the mend

The first flagbearer of Dee Tee Stables - Sumwonlovesyou is recovering nicely from a possible career ending injury. Here's is what transpired as told by Steve Byk when he recently visited our filly in Kentucky.

To SWLY partners:

I was able to fit a visit to Sumwonlovesyou in while visiting Kentucky last week, and was anxious to update everyone on what transpired and how she is doing. We have a lot to be thankful for with SWLY, after a nearly disastrous bout with as bad a hoof infection as those involved in its' treatment have ever seen, (including the Rood and Riddle Equine Podiatrist that directed the care).

As you may know, she had just begun training after her knee injury, when Bluegrass Equine Center Farm Manager Bethani White ("paisjpq" at DT) noticed her favoring her left front. Bethani became increasingly concerned when normal treatment seemed to be ineffective. She and Chuck had the Rood & Riddle Podiatrist brought in, and after Dr. Bramlege was consulted, some serious work began to stop and clean out the infection.

Simply put, and has Chuck has explained slightly bit at DT, instead of pushing down and out the bottom of the foot, Sumwon's abcess/infection was traveling up towards her bone structure. Had it reached there, exceedingly costly surgery, or other very tough decisions, would have resulted. In short, the infection was caught in time. The treatment, which included the use of maggots to eat dead tissue in the formerly infected area, has been a total success to date. As the podiatrist finished his work in the last few weeks, the frog and sole at the bottom of Sumwon's hoof just shed itself completely off as fresh, healthy tissue grew in behind the cleansed area.

These portions of her hoof must grow in completely before SWLY can be evaluated by Chuck for a possible resumption of training. Bethani opened the metal plate covering her 'missing' frog and sole for me to witness, and while I haven't gazed upon countless hooves, I've seen my share... I've never seen anything like this, as she had indeed shed the entire bottom portion of her hoof. All areas of the hoof involved in the incident are now back to normal, and she will simply grow a new frog and sole over the next several months.

As Bethani has said on DT, Sumwon looks terrific, has been improving "ridiculously well" and even broke loose the other day and trotted through the beautiful new BEC barn. She will be considered by Chuck for a possible season of racing as a 5 year old once she is ready to resume training. But as Chuck said to me last Friday night, he sees no reason why she can't come back to race in 2009. If there is any further setback, we would instead begin breeding Sumwon.

Given that Sumwon may return to the track after a layoff that started in September 2007, one thing you may now understand from the experience is how a horse can "disappear" for
14-18 months as she has. How many times have you looked at past performances and said, "Where has this horse been?"... Well, now you know what happens when horses are gone for a year and a half...

Our thanks go out to Bethani and Chuck and the Rood & Riddle staff for the tremendous attentiveness and care involved in this ordeal.

More updates, including photos, soon, but until then, know that Sumwonlovesyou has a real shot to come back as a 5 year old and try to get the elusive win photo we all want to see as Dee Tee Stables' original color-bearer.

Dee Tee Stables update - rolling into Fall!

It’s been sometime since I spoke about my thoroughbred racing partnership; Dee Tee Stables. Created almost two years ago; by Steve Byk from DerbyTrail.com and At the Races Sirius satellite radio and trainer; Chuck Simon they assembled a small group of people that were interested in owning a part of a thoroughbred racehorse. Our first runner; Sumonelovesyou, raced six times for our group in 2007 with three 2nd place finishes. She’s been on the sidelines since her last start on closing weekend of the Spa last year. She has contended with foot problems since last Fall and is on the road to recovery with the hope of returning to the races in the near future. Last October our group claimed our second horse; Kickin N Screamin at Churchill Downs on Breeder’s Cup weekend. After a successful winter run at Tampa Bay Downs with this five year old mare (a 2nd & 3rd in four starts), we shipped to Arlington Park for the spring / summer meet. There we had a victory and 2nd place finish on the “polytrack” and returned to the grass last Thursday, but ran a disappointing 8th. It’s on to Turfway Park for the Fall and winter months with “KNS” which our group lovingly calls her. She’ll return to the races on October 2nd there and back on the “polytrack” surface going two turns. But, the big news from the Dee Tee Stable last weekend was the unveiling of Aldebutante; one of our two year old runners. She made her maiden debut last Sunday in the 5th race at Belmont Park and I got to see the event first hand in person.
A group of about 25 Dee Tee Stable members as well as friends and fellow DerbyTrail followers made the trip to Belmont Park on a very hot Sunday afternoon in September. The daughter of Aldebaran out of an El Gran Senor mare; Donna Gatto was scheduled to race six furlongs on the grass. But, overnight rains caused a switch to the main track and the loss of her named jockey; Richard Migliore because of his commitment first call on another horse that drew into the body of the race. The replacement was Cornelio Velasquez for her first career start. Breaking from post 6 after scratches, she was forced to steady after the start and was pinched back shortly after when trying to get through a hole that closed. She was fanned wide coming into the Belmont stretch, but did show a little life by passing tired horses near the finish. She ended up 7th of nine runners and closed at nearly 12-1 odds. A troubled trip for her maiden voyage, but got the experience of racing between horses and getting dirt kicked in her face (which the jockey said she didn’t care for). Her next start will be at Keeneland racetrack on October 16th going seven furlongs on the polytrack. Even though she wasn’t successful first time out, it was a very enjoyable afternoon in New York and nice to be at Belmont Park when it wasn’t cold like the four previous times I was there for Breeder’s Cup day events. Our fourth runner; Rampillion, another two year old filly was scheduled to race today at Turfway Park for her career debut, but was slightly injured during a workout a week ago and will miss a few weeks of training. She may make her first start at Hoosier Park in Indiana when she is fit to race. It’s been an exciting first 17 months for Dee Tee Stables with our four girls and with the youngsters making their debuts this Fall, 2009 could be a big year for the group.

Lee Tomlinson creator of "Mudders & Turfers" dies

Art Kaufman, who developed the Tomlinson pedigree ratings as a handicapping tool under the name Lee Tomlinson, died on Sunday at age 73 in New York. Kaufman had cancer.

Kaufman first published his Tomlinson ratings in 1986 in "Mudders and Turfers." The three-digit ratings purported to gauge a sire's ability to pass turf or wet-track ability to his offspring. Later, the ratings were expanded to include staying and sprinting ability and were published in "Tomlinson's Comprehensive Guide."Daily Racing Form became the exclusive publisher of the Tomlinson Ratings in 2001.

Kaufman, who was born in the Bronx in New York City, is survived by his wife, Jackie, two daughters, and five grandchildren.
Donations in remembrance of Kaufman may be made to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY, 10065.

The “Wm DoubleFeature” 2-3 double play

Coal Baron (2nd) & Mahwell (3rd)

2008 Travers Stakes - graded selections & plays

Harlem Rocker (4-1) Coa / Pletcher

Only blemish on record was his Plate Trial effort on the polytrack over the Woodbine surface; once considered for the Preakness, he was regarded by some as the only real threat to Big Brown for top 3yr.old honors at year end.

Mambo in Seattle (5-1) Albarado / Howard

Game victory in overnight restricted stake at the Jim Dandy distance the race before the “traditional” prep race; bred to run all day, he could be this year’s Grasshopper in this race.

Colonel John (8-1) Gomez / Harty

My 2008 Kentucky Derby pick returned after disappointing effort in that race to weakened for 3rd in the four horse field Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park; his only “real” dirt try was in the Derby, but wouldn’t ship all the way from California if he wasn’t truly pointing to this race.

Pyro (7-2) Bridgmohan / Asmussen

Rallied on the “good” surface in the Jim Dandy Stakes only to “hang” a bit at the finish, type of horse that needs everything to go his way for victory, at a short price; tough to pick him on top, but an exotic must!

Cool Coal Man (15-1) J. Velazquez / Zito

No factor 3rd behind Big Brown in the Haskell last time out, got a feeling that this Zito runner will be firing a big shot today in this race, Johnny V. in the irons can only help.

Macho Again (6-1) Leparoux / Stewart

Got up in the final jump to win the prep for this race; the Jim Dandy, honest three year old performer, comes into this race with 2nd best Beyer fig.

Court Vision (12-1) Desormeaux / Mott

Without Big Brown, IEAH Stables only hope for Travers gold; raced last two on the Colonial Downs turf, returns to the dirt and is facing the same horses he couldn’t defeat before.

Tale of Ekati (20-1) Prado / Tagg

Disappointed again with even effort in the Jim Dandy, class relief is what this three year old colt needs….or a switch to grass.

Da’ Tara (8-1) Garcia / Zito

Guess his last start in the Jim Dandy proved his Belmont Stakes WAS a fluke; Tizbig who is right outside of him will make him run again, not a good thing.

Tres Borrachos (15-1) Baze / Greeley

Recent winner of the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park beating three other foes; west coast runner was beaten a ton when faced this type of competition in the Preakness Stakes, would be a huge surprise here.

Tizbig (30-1) C.Velasquez / Jerkens

“Wheels” back on very short notice (ran in 3rd race on Sunday) speedy sort will keep the Belmont Stakes winner occupied, but won’t be anywhere around at the finish…. even for the “Giant Killer”.

Amped (30-1) Chavez / Zito

Distant 3rd in restricted race last time out; no early foot and will be passing tired horses late at best.

Ginger Punch – classy as they get….game victory last time out & the one to beat again.
Indescribable – rough trip in the Go For Wand Stakes last time out, should have no problem with the distance.

Race #10

12-1, must use in exotics.

Music Note....now or later?

The showcase race each Saratoga season is the Travers Stakes for the three year old runners coming off the Triple Crown races. The mid-summer’s Derby is the midway point in the season for those horses and after the Travers, it’s time to face the older horses and point for the Breeder’s Cup Classic. This year; the Travers is without the winner of the first two legs of the Triple Crown; Big Brown. With him not in the picture, the Travers field is wide open and the marquee race for the three year olds at the Spa this year isn’t that race. The “marquee” race is being run today and yes it’s at the classic of a mile and a quarter. That race is the Alabama and the field this year is more intriguing than the Travers.
The 2008 edition of the Alabama has a field of six selections runners with only five betting interests. But; those six three year old fillies are of top quality and one that could be a force versus the boys in one week, if she chooses to go there. Music Note; winner of both the grade I – Mother Goose Stakes and Coaching Club American Oaks is set to face her four rivals today along with stablemate entry; Little Belle. But, the big question going into today’s race is; will she opt to race in one week and face a rather suspect, but larger field in the Travers Stakes. This question has been bantered about for several weeks since the leader of the three year old colt division; Big Brown won’t be coming to the Spa.
Granted, Music Note has become one of the best horses in training on the NYRA circuit since she broke her maiden last Fall at Aqueduct going a flat mile. At Belmont Park, she won a non-winners of one allowance test going a mile by seven lengths the end of May. She followed that up with dominating victories in the Mother Goose Stakes (over Proud Spell) and the CCA Oaks over entrymate; Little Belle. The combine total of those two victories was fourteen and a half lengths over a total of nine rivals in both races. She has been dominating, but all those victories were at Belmont Park going one turn. The big question is; will Music Note be as dominate at Saratoga racing two turns as she was going one at Belmont?
As I write this column on Thursday evening, Music Note will most likely race in today’s Alabama Stakes. The field she will be facing is much more tougher than any of the three year old colts she could face in one week. Proud Spell was much the best in the Kentucky Oaks going the same distance and two turns at Churchill Downs. Little Belle her entrymate was runner-up to Proud Spell in the Kentucky Oaks and a distant 2nd behind her in the CCA Oaks last time out. Sweet Vendetta won the second leg of the three year old filly and mare graded I races at Pimlico in the Black Eye Susan’s on a muddy surface. Muska; one of my personal favorite as a two year old, won the “two-turn” Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct last Fall easily and had a prep race over the track. Those are the five rivals that Music Note will have to overcome today going the “classic” distance, but two turns. It is my opinion that she could gain much more if she would wait for the Travers, take her chances against the boys and sealed herself as the best three year old horse in training. The field for the Travers may be over ten runners, one concern of Music Note’s connections. But, without any standout going to post next week, Music Note could prove best in this year’s Mid-Summer Derby. It will be a “game time” decision for Godolphin Stable, but with her entrymate; Little Belle entered in the Alabama also, I say go for the gold. Scratch today and enter in next week’s race. She’s the top filly of this year's three year old group and can beat the boys, especially this group.
